Team’s Collaboration
Inside our team, we designed our work communication to minimise distractions and multi-tasking.
We expect each other to focus and deilver the best we can daily. Mental work is all about the result of the work, not about the number of hours staring at the laptop’s screen, being online, and within seconds to reply.
Hence, it’s not necessary to be present all day long. We don’t have long meetings as we don’t have meetings. We have audio-calls (or video-calls), if needed. The rule of thumb: choose ways of asyncronous communication, if you can. That means either email or a voice memo. Expected turnaround is a day, so if you send your part today, expect your workmate’s reply tomorrow. That takes some habit to get used to, but the communication can become quite clear.
When there’s need to discuss something in real time, we agree to be online at some time frame that works for both parties. E.g. from noon till 2 pm.
The rules aren’t strict and it’s usually discussed between the parties.
Also, that depends on the role, e.g. a manager is expected to be present and online way more than a developer or designer.
That’s our ways of collaboration within the team. Communication channels with a client could be different and are discussed to satisfy both parties. Usually, we tend to avoid real-time communication as much as possible, as most times it’s not necessary and is expensive for both parties.
